What Is a Medical Aesthetician?

Medical Aesthetics blends healthcare with beauty and wellness. A medical aesthetician (sometimes called a clinical aesthetician) has the same basic skincare training as a regular esthetician but also receives additional education to work in medical environments. Medical aestheticians may work independently, as operators of their own practice, or may work alongside dermatologists, plastic surgeons, or other healthcare providers to help prepare patients for procedures or assist with post-treatment recovery.

Medical aestheticians receive specialized training to perform advanced skin care treatments, including:

  • Medical-grade chemical peels
  • Laser treatments (under supervision)
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Microneedling
  • LED light therapy
  • Advanced skin care treatments

Where Can I Get Medical Aesthetician Training?

What Can I Do With a Medical Aesthetics Diploma?

Once you get your diploma, you’ll want to get to work. What can you do with a Medical Aesthetics diploma? With a Medical Aesthetics diploma from the International Beauty Institute, you’ll have a range of career options to choose from. Many medical aestheticians work in medical spas (med spas), while others may work in dermatology clinics or plastic surgery offices. There are many career paths available for those with a Medical Aesthetics diploma, including:

  • Private practice: For those with an entrepreneurial mindset, a Medical Aesthetics diploma can be the foundation for starting a private practice, such as your own MedSpa. Many medical aesthetics professionals combine hands-on treatments with retail skincare sales, creating multiple income streams. Starting your own practice, or working as an independent contractor, allows for flexible schedules and higher earning potential per client.
  • Medical aesthetician/medical esthetician – This represents one of the most common career paths for those with a Medical Aesthetics diploma. In this role, you may open your own spa, or work in medical spas, dermatology clinics, or plastic surgery offices, providing treatments such as laser hair removal, chemical peels, microneedling, body contouring, and advanced skin therapies. Because these services are results-driven and often high-end, professionals can earn significantly more than traditional spa estheticians.
  • Laser technician: Another popular option is working as a laser technician. Laser treatments for skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, tattoo removal, and hair reduction are in high demand. With proper certification and clinical supervision where required, laser technicians can build a lucrative career, especially in urban areas or high-traffic clinics.
  • Cosmetic clinics and/or plastic surgery practices: Medical Aesthetics diploma graduates can work in cosmetic clinics and/or plastic surgery practices, assisting physicians with pre- and post-procedure care. These roles often involve patient consultations, treatment planning, and aftercare education, making them ideal for individuals who enjoy a clinical environment without becoming nurses or doctors.
  • Additional career paths include: medical skincare consultant, aesthetic sales representative, clinical educator, or brand trainer for pharmaceutical and skincare companies. These roles are especially attractive to experienced professionals who want to move beyond treatment rooms while staying in the industry.

What Is the Income-Earning Potential With a Medical Aesthetics Diploma?

In terms of income potential, earnings will vary by location, experience, and specialization. Entry-level professionals may earn a modest salary, while experienced medical aesthetics practitioners can earn a strong six-figure income, particularly when commissions, tips, and advanced treatments are factored in. Business owners and independent providers often have the highest earning potential.
