Last weekend I went to my best friend’s mom’s birthday who just turned 58 and it was a surprisingly enlightening experience. I have known Maria, my best friend, and her mom Willy for 18 years now and Willy has always treated me like a daughter; she had always encouraged me to live my life to the fullest even when I don’t feel like I am living my full potential. Willy is a beautiful woman, she has bright blue eyes, a winning smile and a kind demeanour that attracts people to her like a moth to a flame. Like all of us, she is getting older and on the day of the birthday she was discussing getting botox in her face to feel rejuvenated.
Willy had started researching botox injections, and as most people she held a stigma that botox should be a hush hush procedure, but the more she educated herself on the subject the more she accepted it. Willy’s prime doubt about botox and dermal fillers was that she didn’t want to appear ‘inflated’ as some people do after a bad injection procedure, so she looked into the proper courses needed to achieve a botox certification for estheticians. Willy’s approach to botox positively changed as she realized the education a specialist needs to go through in order to be a licensed esthetican; courses included licensesure and liability issues, possible side-effects, potential results and time frames and post-treatment follow-up. IBI’s training program in Hamilton seemed the closest to her home, and Willy was starting to get really excited about the potential of botox injections.

We celebrated the birthday girl until the Sun came up, and Willy kept pulling up old photos of her as a teenager. It wasn’t so much the nostalgia that she missed, but the way she looked full of life in her pictures; she regretted not loving her chubby cheeks in her 20’s. Willy wished she flaunted more of her appearance when she was younger and advised me to do it while I’m still young. She said that the older you get, the more you want to kick yourself in the butt for not realizing how beautiful you are when you are younger. Considering botox and botox and dermal filler courses gave Willy an age jolt, and I think the greatest gift she received that day was the potential to feel like the younger version of herself. Everyone gets older, that’s just the way time works, and some people get engulfed in the negative sides of being older when they should enjoy the positive fact that they are only as young as they feel.
Everyone gets older, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a bad experience!
