Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic and Lactic) are naturally occurring acids derived from the sugars in particular substances. These acids work by dissolving the bond that holds dead skin cells together. This increases cell turnover, and at greater concentrations, deeper dermal effects such as increased collagen synthesis. The activity of an Alpha Hydroxy Acid involves the concentration of AHA and the pH. Effective concentrations should be at 8% with a pH between 2.5 and 4.0. Lactic acid is a natural humectant and Lactic Acid’s larger molecule size makes it less irritating than Glycolic Acid.
